| Road type | Base limit (km/h) | Rain/snow | New drivers |
|---|---|---|---|
| Motorway | 130 | 110 | 100 |
| Main extra-urban | 110 | 90 | 90 |
| Secondary extra-urban | 90 | 90 | 90 |
| Built-up area | 50 (or as signed: 30) | 50 | 50 |
Rule one: signage wins. The table gives the general maxima, but a posted sign (variable motorway limits, 30 zones, works) always prevails. Watch for Italy's variable-limit gantries on smart motorways.
| Exceedance | Sanction | Points |
|---|---|---|
| Up to 10 km/h | €42–173 | — |
| 10–40 km/h | €173–695 | −3 |
| 40–60 km/h | €543–2,170 + 1–3 month suspension | −6 |
| Over 60 km/h | €845–3,382 + 6–12 month suspension | −10 |
New drivers lose double the points. Speed-camera detections apply the tolerance automatically: at a signed 130 the sanction starts in practice above ~136 detected — but planning around tolerance is how people collect the 10–40 band.
Speed questions are trap royalty: the «always 130» that ignores rain, the new-driver 100, the secondary-road 90 confused with the main-road 110. The method: learn the table as a grid (road type × condition), not as prose — and drill the trap catalogue until the reflex flips. On the road, the same grid keeps your licence intact.
