📊 How hard is the Italian driving theory exam?
The margin is razor-thin: 3 errors out of 30 questions means you need 90% correct answers — a fourth mistake and you fail. Most failures aren't about lack of study: they come from trick questions read too fast, outdated material, and booking the exam too early.
For non-native speakers there's an extra layer: the exam is held in Italian only (German and French in bilingual provinces). The good news — the exam vocabulary is limited and repetitive, and studying bilingually makes it click fast. 📋 The theory exam by licence category
For the patente B (and AM, A1, A2, A, B1, BE) the exam is 30 True/False statements in 20 minutes, drawn from the Ministry database, with a maximum of 3 errors. Your application gives you 2 attempts within 6 months; after a fail you wait about a month before retrying.
Professional licences C1, C, CE (trucks) and D1, D, DE (buses) have 40 questions in 40 minutes with max 4 errors and their own technical topics. The CQC professional qualification is a separate 70-question exam. If you already hold a licence with equivalent theory (e.g. B), you skip the quiz for A1/A2 and only take the practical test.
The exam is computerized: you'll answer on a screen at the Motorizzazione, and the result appears immediately.
📝 Documents and how to apply
For the patente B you need: to be at least 18 (14 for AM, 16 for A1), a medical certificate of fitness with revenue stamp, form TT2112, passport photos and the PagoPA payments generated on the Portale dell'Automobilista (theory exam fee 26,40 € plus 16 € stamps). Non-EU citizens also need a valid residence permit.
You can apply through a driving school or as a private candidate (da privatista), filing directly at the Motorizzazione: preparing online with up-to-date quizzes is fully valid and increasingly common — and it's how most expats save money.
Your application includes two attempts within 6 months: if the first goes badly, you get a second chance without paying again. Still… better to pass first try. 😉
🚗 What happens after you pass the theory?
Passing the theory earns you the foglio rosa (learner's permit), valid 12 months with up to 3 attempts at the practical exam. Before the road test, certified lessons with an instructor (night, out-of-town and motorway driving) are mandatory — for private candidates too.
The classic advice: start driving lessons right after the theory, while the rules are fresh — the better you know the theory, the fewer paid lessons you need. 💶
Once licensed, you're a neopatentato for the first 3 years: power limits on cars, reduced speed limits and zero-alcohol (0.0 g/l) under the new Italian road code. See you on the road! 🚦
