For new drivers, under-21s and professionals any value above 0.0 g/l is sanctioned, with 10 points deducted; past the ordinary thresholds, sanctions are aggravated. Refusing the breath test is punished at the most severe band.

How much is «one glass»? Why no formula is safe

Blood alcohol depends on weight, sex, full or empty stomach, drinking speed and metabolism: the same beer can put one person at 0.3 and another at 0.6 g/l. That's why bar-stool arithmetic is unreliable — and for new drivers the question doesn't even arise: with 0.0, the only safe rule is not drinking when driving. Visitors from countries with 0.8 limits (UK, some US states): recalibrate — Italy's 0.5 arrives faster than you think.

The alcolock: how the repeat-offender rule works

A second offence above 0.8 g/l brings the obligation to install, at your own expense, an alcolock: the engine won't start if the device detects alcohol.
