| Situation | Rule |
|---|---|
| Practice with an accompanying driver | ✅ Licence B held for at least 10 years, within the age rules in force |
| Drive alone | ❌ Never: an accompanying driver or instructor is always required |
| Carry passengers | ⚠️ Only within the rules — the accompanying driver must still be beside you |
| Motorway and night driving | ✅ In certified lessons with an instructor; with the accompanying driver, ordinary rules apply |
| «P» plate | ✅ Mandatory, visible front and rear |
The certified lessons (night, out-of-town, motorway) with a licensed instructor are mandatory for private candidates too: without the attestation you cannot access the practical exam.
With the foglio rosa you get up to 3 attempts at the practical within the 12 months, at least 30 days apart. If the permit expires or you burn the attempts, the process restarts — though recent rules allow, in some cases, carrying over the passed theory: check your specific situation at the Motorizzazione before assuming everything is lost.
Driving without an accompanying driver, without the «P» plate or outside the permitted limits brings heavy administrative fines — up to €1,695 — and consequences for your licence process. The practical rule: with a foglio rosa, every kilometre is driven either with the instructor or with a compliant accompanying driver. Once you pass, the first 3 years bring their own limits: see licence conversion if you're coming from abroad, or the new-driver rules on the Italian side of the site.
