Infographic: Military vehicles and licences: key rules

The armed forces independently manage all aspects related to their vehicles. This includes technical inspections, registration, issuance of circulation documents, and licence plates. Military vehicles therefore follow a specific internal system rather than standard civilian procedures.

When military vehicles exceed the standard limits of size or weight set for road circulation, they may still be used on public roads only if a special authorization is granted by the competent military authority. In such cases, an escort may also be required to ensure safety.

Regarding drivers, the armed forces are responsible for their training, assessment of requirements, and driving tests. They issue military driving licences, which allow driving only vehicles belonging to the armed forces. They also issue certifications for military driving instructors and theory teachers. These roles are not subject to the standard rules applicable to civilian driving schools and instructors.

Holders of a military driving licence can obtain an equivalent civilian licence without taking an exam, provided they apply through their authority during service or within one year after leaving service. The same applies to military driving instructors, who may obtain the civilian equivalent certification without examination within the same time limit.

Vehicles that are no longer used by the armed forces can be re-registered as civilian vehicles after verifying that they meet all legal requirements. The characteristics of military licence plates are determined jointly by the relevant authorities.

The armed forces are also responsible for transporting specific materials, such as radioactive substances, and must comply with strict technical and safety regulations. Military collective transport vehicles used for official purposes are treated as public transport vehicles.

These provisions also apply to other public services such as police, fire brigades, civil protection, and similar bodies. In certain cases, vehicles used for public service may tow trailers wider than the towing vehicle, within general limits.

Driving a civilian vehicle using a military licence without meeting the required conditions leads to penalties and possible suspension of the licence. However, it is allowed to drive civilian vehicles with a military or service licence if they are used for official state duties.
