When a vehicle registered abroad circulates in Italy, its country of registration must be clearly identifiable. For this reason, it is mandatory for the vehicle to display, on the rear side, the distinguishing sign of the country of registration. This mark allows immediate identification of the vehicleโs origin and is essential for checks and for applying international regulations.
The sign must comply with international conventions, which define its format, size and how it must be displayed. In practice, these are official country codes such as โIโ for Italy, โFโ for France or โDโ for Germany, shown according to internationally recognised standards.
It is very important that no different or incorrect country codes are used. This rule applies both to foreign vehicles and to vehicles registered in Italy. For example, it is not allowed to display a different country code for aesthetic or personal reasons, as this could create confusion about the vehicleโs origin.
Failure to comply with these rules results in an administrative fine. If the distinguishing sign is missing, incorrect or not compliant, the driver or vehicle owner may be penalised.
In summary, every vehicle circulating in Italy must correctly display the country identification mark of its registration. This ensures transparency, facilitates control, and guarantees compliance with international road traffic rules.
