Revocation of a driving license is one of the most severe penalties under traffic law. It means that the license is permanently cancelled and no longer valid.
The revocation may be issued by the Motor Vehicle Department or by the Prefect, depending on the case. When it is an accessory penalty to a violation, the Prefect of the place where the violation occurred issues the order. The police authority informs the Prefect within five days, who verifies the conditions and orders the revocation, including the surrender of the license.
Revocation is a definitive measure. Unlike suspension, it permanently removes the right to drive.
After revocation, a new license cannot be obtained immediately. Generally, at least two years must pass before applying for a new license. In more serious cases, such as severe drunk driving or driving under the influence of drugs, the minimum period increases to three years from the date of the offense.
For some professional drivers, revocation may also have employment consequences. In certain cases, it may constitute a valid reason for dismissal.
This rule ensures that individuals who commit serious violations or no longer meet the required conditions are removed from driving.
