When a traffic violation leads to the suspension of the vehicle registration certificate, the police officer immediately withdraws it during the inspection. This action is recorded in the report. The driver receives a temporary permit that allows them only to drive the vehicle to a safe storage location.
Within five days, the certificate and the report are sent to the competent Motor Vehicle Office. Within the next fifteen days, the office issues an order specifying the duration of the suspension. The duration depends on the seriousness of the violation, the damage caused, and the potential risk of continued use of the vehicle.
The suspension period starts from the moment the document is withdrawn. If the order is not issued within fifteen days, the owner has the right to have the document returned.
If the document was issued by a foreign country, the suspension applies only within Italy and is communicated to the issuing country.
At the end of the suspension period, the certificate is returned and the return is officially recorded.
It is possible to appeal the suspension. If the appeal is accepted, the document is returned immediately; if rejected, the suspension remains valid.
Driving a vehicle during the suspension period is a serious violation. It results in a high financial penalty and suspension of the driving license from three to twelve months. In case of repeated violation, the vehicle may be confiscated.
