When a traffic violation leads to the suspension of a driving license, the police officer immediately withdraws it during the inspection. This action is recorded in the report. The driver is given a temporary permit only to drive the vehicle to a safe storage location.
Within five days, the license and the report are sent to the competent Prefecture. Within fifteen days, the Prefect issues an order determining the duration of the suspension. The duration depends on the seriousness of the violation, the damage caused, and the risk posed by continued driving.
If the violation did not result in an accident, the driver may request a special permit to drive during limited hours for work or specific needs (such as assisting family members). This permit can be granted for up to three hours per day and only once. If granted, the suspension period is extended.
The suspension period starts from the day the license is withdrawn. If the Prefect does not issue the order within the required time, the driver may request the return of the license.
If the driver commits repeated violations of the same type, the suspension period may increase. In such cases, previous violations are checked and noted.
At the end of the suspension period, the license is returned and officially recorded.
It is possible to appeal the suspension. However, driving during the suspension period is a very serious offense. It results in a high financial penalty, revocation of the license, and administrative immobilization of the vehicle for three months. In case of repeated violation, the vehicle may be confiscated.
