Vehicles are classified under the highway code into different categories based on their characteristics and use. This classification helps distinguish between various types of vehicles and establishes specific rules for each.
There are non-motorized vehicles, such as hand-pushed or animal-drawn vehicles, as well as common ones like bicycles. Other types include sledges. Motor vehicles include mopeds, motorcycles, and cars, as well as trolleybuses powered by overhead electric lines. The classification also includes trailers, agricultural machinery, work machines used for specific tasks, and vehicles with special or atypical characteristics.
Motor vehicles are further classified according to international categories. Category L includes light vehicles with two, three, or four wheels. For example, low-speed mopeds with limited power fall into lower categories, while more powerful motorcycles or three-wheeled vehicles belong to higher categories. Quadricycles, such as small microcars, are also included and are classified based on weight, speed, and power.
Category M includes vehicles designed for transporting people with at least four wheels. This category distinguishes between smaller vehicles, such as passenger cars, and larger vehicles like buses, based on seating capacity and mass.
Category N includes vehicles used for transporting goods. These are divided mainly according to their maximum mass, ranging from light commercial vehicles to heavy trucks.
Category O refers to trailers and semi-trailers, which are also classified by their maximum mass. This classification is important because it determines usage rules, licensing requirements, and restrictions.
For the theory exam, it is essential to understand that vehicles are divided into different categories depending on their structure, power, and purpose, and that these differences affect driving rules and licensing.
