Infographic: Display of circulation stickers

In the past, the law required motor vehicles to display certain stickers clearly visible, usually on the front part of the vehicle or on the windscreen. These included the sticker proving payment of the vehicle tax and the one relating to compulsory insurance. The purpose of this requirement was to allow authorities to quickly verify whether the vehicle was compliant.

For motorcycles and mopeds, these stickers did not have to be displayed on the vehicle. However, the driver still had to carry them and present them if requested during a check. This ensured that compliance could still be verified even without visible display.

With technological progress and the digitalization of records, this system has largely been replaced. Today, thanks to electronic databases and automated control systems, it is no longer necessary to physically display the insurance sticker on the windscreen. Authorities can directly check through digital systems whether a vehicle is insured and compliant.

Despite this change, the general principle remains important for theory exam preparation: the vehicle must always comply with tax obligations and have valid compulsory insurance. Even if physical display is no longer required, having valid insurance coverage remains mandatory.

If a driver violates the rules concerning the display requirement (where still applicable), an administrative penalty applies. In addition, rules requiring the later presentation of documents may also apply if they were not shown at the time of the check.

For exam preparation, it is useful to remember that the law has evolved: the physical obligation to display stickers has largely been removed, but the underlying obligation remains. This means that the vehicle must always be insured and compliant, even though checks are now mainly carried out electronically.
