Infographic: Motor vehicles: types and uses

Motor vehicles are vehicles with at least four wheels and represent the most common category in road traffic. They do not include motorcycles and are classified based on their main function, meaning the type of transport they perform and their construction characteristics.

Passenger cars are vehicles designed to transport people and can have up to nine seats, including the driver. Buses are also designed to transport people but have more than nine seats and are used for public or group transport.

There are vehicles designed to carry both people and goods, known as mixed-use vehicles. These have a limited total mass and can carry up to nine people. Trucks, on the other hand, are mainly intended for transporting goods and may also carry personnel involved in loading or handling the cargo.

Road tractors are vehicles designed exclusively to tow trailers or semi-trailers and are not intended to carry goods or passengers directly. When combined with a semi-trailer, they form an articulated vehicle, while a vehicle towing a separate trailer forms a road train.

Some motor vehicles are designed for specific purposes. Vehicles for specific transport are built to carry particular goods or people under special conditions and are equipped with permanent installations. Vehicles for special use are mainly intended to perform a specific function thanks to permanently installed equipment, and they may carry the personnel and materials needed for that function.

Articulated buses consist of two rigid sections connected by a joint that allows passenger movement between them. Motor caravans are vehicles equipped for both transport and accommodation, functioning as mobile living spaces and carrying up to seven people.

Work vehicles are used mainly in construction or road works and are equipped with special tools. They may carry materials exceeding standard weight limits under certain legal conditions.

For the theory exam, it is essential to understand that motor vehicles are classified according to their purpose and technical features, and each category is subject to specific rules regarding use and circulation.
