Infographic: Obstruction of the roadway

When the roadway is obstructed, for example due to a vehicle breakdown, fallen cargo, or any other reason, the driver must act immediately to avoid danger to other road users. They must try to clear the road as quickly as possible by removing the obstruction or moving the vehicle off the roadway. If this is not possible, the vehicle should be placed on the right edge of the road, parallel to the direction of traffic.

If substances such as slippery or flammable materials fall onto the road, the driver must immediately take action to ensure safety. This includes taking all necessary precautions to reduce risks and allow other vehicles to pass safely.

In all such cases, it is mandatory to warn other road users of the danger. This is usually done using a warning triangle, but other suitable means may be used if necessary. The driver must also inform the road authority or the police.

Failure to comply with these obligations results in an administrative fine.
