To be allowed on public roads, some agricultural machines must be registered and have a registration document, while others only require a certificate of technical suitability. Generally, larger or more complex machines require registration, while simpler or lighter ones may operate with only a technical certificate. For example, certain small agricultural trailers with limited weight may not require registration but must still meet technical suitability requirements.

The registration document or technical certificate is issued by the competent motor vehicle authority. Registration is carried out in the name of specific subjects, such as agricultural entrepreneurs, companies performing agricultural work, businesses renting agricultural machinery, public entities, or dealers. In some cases, for machines with limited weight, registration can also be done in the name of a private owner.

Agricultural machines may also be registered in the name of a network of agricultural enterprises. In this case, the network must be formally established and identified, and one company must be designated to handle administrative responsibilities, acting as the vehicle owner.

When ownership of a registered agricultural machine changes, or when the owner changes residence or business location, this must be reported within thirty days to the competent authority, along with the required documentation and registration document. The authority then updates the official records. Ownership transfer is recorded only if the new owner meets the legal requirements.

All procedures related to registration, documentation, and updates are now carried out electronically, often through authorized intermediaries connected to the official systems.

Driving an agricultural machine without the required documents results in an administrative fine. Failing to comply with the conditions stated in the documents, such as technical limitations, also leads to penalties. Additionally, not reporting ownership or address changes within the required time results in a fine and may lead to the withdrawal of the registration document until the situation is corrected.
