Infographic: Stopping, halting and parking of vehicles

In traffic law, it is essential to distinguish between stopping, halting, and parking, as they represent different situations with specific rules. Stopping refers to a temporary interruption of driving due to traffic conditions, such as stopping at a traffic light or to give way. Halting is a short stop for brief needs, such as picking up or dropping off passengers, and requires the driver to remain in the vehicle ready to move. Parking, on the other hand, is a longer stop during which the driver may leave the vehicle. Emergency stopping occurs when the vehicle cannot continue due to a breakdown or a health issue.

When halting or parking, the vehicle must be positioned as close as possible to the right edge of the roadway, parallel to it and in the direction of travel. Sufficient space must be left for pedestrians, at least one meter, if there is no sidewalk. During parking, the engine must be turned off.

Outside built-up areas, stopping and parking should be done off the roadway whenever possible and never on cycle paths. If this is not possible, the vehicle must still be placed as far to the right as possible. Parking is prohibited on priority roads.

On one-way urban streets, parking is also allowed on the left side, provided there is enough space for traffic to pass, in any case not less than three meters. In designated parking areas, vehicles must be positioned according to road markings.

Where parking is time-limited, the driver must indicate the start time clearly, for example using a parking disc. If a control device is present, it must be activated.

It is forbidden to open vehicle doors or exit the vehicle without ensuring that it does not create danger or obstruction. It is also prohibited to keep the engine running while parked in order to use the air conditioning, and this violation carries a higher fine.

Overall, these rules ensure safety, smooth traffic flow, and respect for other road users. Violations result in administrative penalties.
