Infographic: Trailers: definition and types

Trailers are vehicles that cannot move on their own and are designed to be towed by other vehicles, such as motor vehicles or trolleybuses. They do not have their own engine and rely entirely on the towing vehicle for movement. They can only be used with certain types of vehicles as defined by law.

Trailers are classified according to their function. Some are intended for transporting people, but only if they have at least two axles or are semi-trailers. Others are used for transporting goods. There are also trailers designed for specific transport purposes, built to carry particular types of loads or to meet special requirements, and trailers for special use, equipped with permanent equipment that defines their function.

A particular type of trailer is the caravan, which is equipped to serve as accommodation but only when stationary. There are also trailers designed to carry tourist or sports equipment, such as boats or gliders, specifically adapted for these purposes.

Semi-trailers are a special type of trailer designed so that part of their weight is supported by the towing vehicle. This is because part of the semi-trailer rests directly on the towing unit, forming a combined structure during movement.

Small auxiliary trailers, known as luggage trailers, have no more than two wheels and are used to transport luggage or light items. If they meet certain size and weight limits, they are considered part of the towing vehicle rather than a separate vehicle.

Some trailers used for transporting goods may also be used for transporting live animals, but only if they are properly equipped and authorized by the relevant authorities, in accordance with animal welfare regulations.

For the theory exam, it is important to remember that trailers are not independent vehicles, that there are different types based on their use, and that some categories, such as semi-trailers and small auxiliary trailers, have specific characteristics affecting their classification and use.
