Paying the vehicle tax is a fundamental obligation for all vehicle owners. If this tax is not paid for at least three consecutive years, the competent authority starts a formal procedure against the owner.
The owner receives an official notification informing them about the start of the procedure. From that moment, they have 30 days to prove that the tax has been paid or to provide a valid justification. If no proof of payment or valid reason is provided within this period, the authority requests the cancellation of the vehicle from official registers.
The vehicle is then removed from both the national vehicle archive and the Public Vehicle Registry. After this, the vehicle is no longer considered registered and loses the right to circulate on public roads. The license plates and registration certificate are withdrawn by the police authorities.
If the vehicle is used after being removed from the registers, severe penalties apply, similar to those for driving an unregistered vehicle. This means the vehicle cannot be legally used until the situation is resolved.
In summary, long-term failure to pay the vehicle tax can lead not only to financial penalties and debt, but also to losing the legal right to use the vehicle.
