Vehicle towing is regulated by specific rules to ensure road safety. In general, a vehicle cannot tow more than one other vehicle, and it cannot be towed by more than one vehicle at the same time. This rule prevents dangerous and difficult-to-control situations while driving. Exceptions apply only in special cases, such as exceptional transport, which require specific authorization.
A motor vehicle may tow another vehicle that is not a trailer only in particular situations, for example when the towed vehicle is no longer able to move on its own due to a breakdown or missing essential parts. In such cases, towing must be carried out safely, with a secure connection between the vehicles and appropriate driving precautions. This includes maintaining a suitable speed, avoiding sudden maneuvers, and ensuring control of the towed vehicle.
In special cases, the Ministry of Transport may authorize the towing of vehicles that are not normally considered trailers, but only under specific conditions.
The technical aspects of towing, such as the coupling system and maximum towable mass, are defined by regulations. It is important to respect these limits, as improper towing can compromise vehicle stability and increase the risk of accidents.
Anyone who violates these rules is subject to an administrative fine. For the theory exam, it is important to remember that towing must always be carried out safely, that normally only one vehicle may be towed, and that towing non-standard vehicles is allowed only in specific regulated cases.
