Vintage vehicles and vehicles of historical or collectible interest are considered atypical vehicles. These are special vehicles that, due to their age or historical value, do not fully fit into modern vehicle categories.
Vintage vehicles are those that have been removed from the Public Vehicle Register and are preserved, for example, in museums or private collections. They retain their original technical characteristics and often do not comply with modern safety or equipment standards required for road use. For this reason, they cannot circulate freely.
Their circulation is only allowed during specific events, such as authorized exhibitions or rallies. In such cases, a special authorization is required from the competent authorities. This authorization defines the permitted routes, duration, and maximum speed, based on safety considerations. Any change of ownership must also be reported to keep official records updated.
Vehicles of historical or collectible interest are different. These are vehicles registered in official recognized registers, such as those of historical automotive or motorcycle associations. Unlike vintage vehicles, they are allowed to circulate on public roads, but only if they meet specific technical requirements defined by regulations. They must therefore be roadworthy while maintaining their historical characteristics.
If a vintage vehicle is used without authorization, or if a historic vehicle does not meet the required technical conditions, administrative fines apply. The amount of the fine depends on whether the vehicle is a car or a motorcycle.
For the theory exam, it is essential to clearly distinguish between vintage vehicles and historic vehicles. Vintage vehicles have restricted use limited to authorized events, while historic vehicles can circulate if they comply with technical requirements.
