Self-propelled agricultural machines must be equipped with a rear license plate in order to circulate on public roads. This plate contains the registration data and is essential for identifying the vehicle. Without a license plate, the machine is not considered legally authorized for road use.
When agricultural machines form a convoy, meaning one machine is towing others or equipment, the last vehicle in the line must always be clearly identifiable. If the license plate of the towing machine is not visible because it is covered by the load or the towed machines, a repeating plate must be placed on the last vehicle. This ensures that other road users and authorities can easily identify the convoy.
Agricultural trailers, except for very light ones with a total mass not exceeding 1.5 tons, must have their own license plate with registration data. This means that larger trailers are treated as independent vehicles for identification purposes.
The rules regarding license plates, including their format, issuance, production, distribution, and return, follow the same regulations as those for other vehicles, where applicable. The specific procedures are defined by ministerial decrees.
Anyone who does not comply with these requirements, for example by driving without a plate, with a plate that is not visible, or with an incorrect plate, is subject to administrative penalties. This highlights the importance of proper vehicle identification for road safety and control.
