The production and distribution of vehicle license plates are exclusively reserved for the State. This means that only authorized entities can manufacture and provide official plates, ensuring security, uniform standards, and protection against counterfeiting. The price of the plates is set by authorities and includes both production costs and an additional amount used to fund road safety activities.
License plates are delivered to the owner at the time of vehicle registration, together with the registration certificate. From that moment, the vehicle is officially registered and can circulate according to legal requirements.
After registration, it is also mandatory to complete the registration in the Public Vehicle Registry within a short period. If this step is not completed within three days, the owner must return both the plates and the registration document to the competent office. If this obligation is not fulfilled, the authorities will seize them through police intervention.
The law strictly prohibits the unauthorized production, distribution, or sale of license plates. Anyone who manufactures or sells plates without authorization is subject to administrative penalties and, in more serious cases, criminal consequences if the act constitutes a crime.
In case of violation, in addition to fines, illegally produced or used plates are confiscated. This ensures that only official plates are used and that all vehicles can be identified in a secure and reliable way.
