Infographic: Temporary permit and plate

The temporary permit, known as “foglio di via,” allows vehicles that are not yet registered or for which vehicle tax has not been paid to circulate, but only for specific and limited purposes. This document must always be accompanied by a temporary license plate and is issued by the competent transport authority.

The use of this permit is allowed in particular situations, such as technical inspections, transferring a vehicle to a border for export, or participating in authorized events like exhibitions, fairs, or shows. It cannot be used for normal daily driving.

The permit clearly specifies the route the vehicle must follow, the duration of validity, and any technical conditions that must be respected. Generally, the duration cannot exceed sixty days. However, for special cases such as testing new vehicles, a special permit may be issued for up to one hundred eighty days without route limitations.

Manufacturers may also use vehicles with a temporary permit to transport other new vehicles intended for export or events. This allows efficient transport of multiple vehicles while still complying with legal requirements.

Anyone who drives without carrying the temporary permit or the temporary plate is subject to administrative fines. Not following the specified route or technical conditions also results in penalties.

If these violations are repeated several times, more serious consequences apply. In addition to higher fines, the vehicle may be confiscated, meaning it is permanently taken from the owner.
