Infographic: Vehicle removal or immobilization

When a traffic violation requires the removal of a vehicle, the police authorities carry it out directly. The vehicle is transported to a designated storage area according to the rules established by regulation. This measure is always recorded in the violation report.

To recover the vehicle, the owner or authorized person must pay all related costs, including intervention, towing, and storage. Only after payment can the vehicle be returned.

In some cases, instead of removal, the vehicle may be immobilized, meaning it is physically prevented from being used. This measure is also decided by the police and noted in the report. To remove the immobilization, the owner must request it and pay the related costs.

If the owner does not claim the vehicle within 180 days from the notification of the report, the vehicle may be sold or destroyed. If sold, the proceeds are used to cover the fine and expenses. Any remaining amount is returned to the owner.

It is possible to appeal the removal or immobilization to the Prefect.
