While driving, the correct use of lights is essential to ensure visibility and safety. Motor vehicles must use position lights and dipped headlights when driving outside built-up areas. Where required, this also includes number plate lighting and clearance lights.
For certain categories of vehicles such as mopeds, motorcycles, tricycles, and quadricycles, this obligation applies even within built-up areas. This is because these vehicles are less visible than cars and must always be clearly seen by other road users.
As an alternative to dipped headlights and position lights, daytime running lights may be used if the vehicle is equipped with them. However, this is only allowed in situations where the use of other specific lights is not required, such as in poor visibility conditions, as defined by other traffic rules.
The main purpose of these rules is to ensure that vehicles are always visible, both during the day and at night, especially outside built-up areas where speeds are higher and the risk of accidents is greater.
Vehicles of historical or collectible interest are exempt from these requirements, as they may follow different rules.
Failure to comply with lighting requirements results in an administrative fine. For the theory exam, it is important to remember that lights are used not only to see the road, but also to be seen by others.
